Testing the Universal Soil Loss Equation-MB equation in plots in Central and South Italy
2019
Planning soil conservation strategies requires predictive techniques at event scale because a large percentage of soil loss over a long-time period is due to relatively few large storms. Considering runoff is expected to improve soil loss predictions and allows relation of the process-oriented approach with the empirical one, furthermore, the effects of detachment and transport on soil erosion processes can be distinguished by a runoff component. In this paper, the empirical model USLE-MB (USLE-M based), including a rainfall-runoff erosivity factor in which the event rainfall erosivity index EI30 of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) multiplies the runoff coefficient QR raised to an ex…
Compost Amendment Impact on Soil Physical Quality Estimated from Hysteretic Water Retention Curve
2022
Capacity-based indicators of soil physical quality (SPQ) and pore distribution parameters were proposed to assess the effects of compost amendment but their determination was limited to desorption water retention experiments. This study also considered the pore size distribution obtained from adsorption experiments to establish the effectiveness of compost amendment in modifying the physical and hydrological attributes of a sandy loam soil. Repacked soil samples with different compost to soil ratios, r, were subjected to a wetting–drying cycle, and the water retention data were fit to the van Genuchten model to obtain the pore volume distribution functions. The soil bulk density was m…
On-Orbit Degradation of Solar Instruments
2013
International audience; We present the lessons learned about the degradation observed in several space solar missions, based on contributions at the Workshop about On-Orbit Degradation of Solar and Space Weather Instruments that took place at the Solar Terrestrial Centre of Excellence (Royal Observatory of Belgium) in Brussels on 3 May 2012. The aim of this workshop was to open discussions related to the degradation observed in Sun-observing instruments exposed to the effects of the space environment. This article summarizes the various lessons learned and offers recommendations to reduce or correct expected degradation with the goal of increasing the useful lifespan of future and ongoing s…

‘The will to not be empowered (according to your rules)’: Resistance in Finnish participatory social policy
2018
Participation has increasingly become a means and an end for successful and ‘empowering’ social policy. Building on previous governmentality critiques of participatory initiatives, this article investigates practices of resistance in the context of Finnish participatory social policy. I adopt a Foucauldian counter-conducts approach as my lens to study critical speech as a form of resistance in initiatives that invite marginalised people as ‘experts-by-experience’ in social welfare organisations. I illustrate how practices of governing and resistance are intertwined and mutually dependent in a much subtler and more practical manner than allows the often-used analytical dichotomy between domi…
Velkommen til Norge : en studie av Refugees Welcome to Norway og Refugees Welcome to Vest-Agders kommunikasjon i sosiale medier
2016
2016
2016
Masteroppgave samfunnskommunikasjon- Universitetet i Agder, 2016 The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of Facebook among a young group of students at a Bible school in a refugee camp called Mae La Refugee Camp. The students are Karen people, an ethnic minority who mainly live in Burma and Thailand. There is relatively little research on the use of social media among this specific group. In addition, the situation around the students are currently changing fast because of political changes in both Thailand and Myanmar, but also on the basic of increased access to modern communications technology in previously isolated refugee camps like the Mae La Refugee Camp. The paper is base…
